It wasn't in sculpting that George Sepetzoglou first made
a name for himself, but interior design. He completed his
studies at the school of Doxiades in Design and Decorative
Arts, learning from great professors like Mitaras and Zoumpoylaki.
George also spent time in Paris doing further research and
experimentation. Once back in Greece, George cooperated
with major interior design studios, eventually establishing
his own business in Athens. He became a recognized name
for his work designing many offices, homes and businesses,
including the interior design of the revered Zolotas jewelry
chain.
Over the past 10 years, George has built a new reputation
for his excellence in metal sculptures and, as of last year,
ceramics. I visited his workshop in Athens, to learn more
about the artist, his style and inspirations. There were
sketches and measuring tools on his drawing table, reminiscent
of his work in interior design. Across the room was another
large table with wet clay and small figures set out to dry,
obviously where he now spends most of his time as a sculptor.
George began to explain his style as having clear influence
from the ancient Cycladic and Minoan art indigenous to Greece.
The pieces are simple, minimalistic, having only a few lines
to outline their form or expression. His pieces are uncomplicated
and don't indicate a continuation or a past, but are more
like icons, representing themselves in a stoic state and
with unadorned form. George uses only the naturally occurring
colors in bronze, aluminum, silver, and stoneware clay to
accent his conceptions. His use of subjects, like animals
and heads, give his work masculine undertones, but his primordial
style is complimented with his contemporary vision that
gives his work a timelessness and universal appeal. His
collection is diverse, including office tools, decorative
and practical use items, games, micro sculptures, and even
a line of elegant jewelry for women!
George continues to cooperate with Zolotas
today, designing limited number collections exclusively
for their shops. He also provides special corporate gifts
for large companies, such as Marlboro in Greece. His work
is found at fine galleries throughout Greece, England, Cyprus
and Belgium. For businesses outside of Greece interested
